Since I Never Get Tired Of Kid Pictures...

...I have decided to grace you with a few pictures of what our kids look like on Sunday mornings around here. Thankfully, lunch landed mostly in their mouths yesterday, and they are standing behind the ottoman, so you can't see the pizza sauce on a certain little boy's pants!

Cool Things

At my girls weekend back in November, I was amazed to find that 'youtubing' is considered a pastime of sorts. That folks just go to youtube and browse. Today, I poked around a bit and this is what I found that stuck out the most.

It is a testament to my odd sense of humor. And, then the fact that I don't know now to embed the video into my blog is a testament to my lack of coolness.

Sorry, folks. Take me as I am...or my blog, anyway.

Funkity Funk

Just so you know, we are still here. I just don't have anything to say. I have a lot going on in my head, but nothing I am ready to share yet. The kids are up to their usual antics, but they are fewer and farther between because everyone has a cold.

In other news, it snowed here today. In north Alabama. Snow. Honest to goodness, white, fluffy, cold snow.

That of course didn't stick.

But Joshua scraped enough off the vehicles to create a snowball for each Thomas and Sarah Grace. They played with them in the bathroom until their hands got cold. (translate - 7.81 seconds)

So, until I have real words, scroll down the side bar and check out Toomers' Corner. A friend of mine from church, and he's always good for a deep thought or a laugh. Be sure to read about his deer hunting expertise.

25+25+1

Okay, so the previous post told you about some of the shopping we did as we tried to pull it together to get a cake made for my Dad's birthday. I won't say in the post how old he is.

That day was honestly a study in Murphy's Law. Or maybe that just describes me. Joshua once remarked that if it could possibly happen badly, it would happen badly to me. I dunno. I don't feel that taboo, but sometimes I wonder if he is right and I just don't see it because I am so used to it. Enough ponderings on things that are beyond reasoning out though. In fact, if you want more gory details on that day, just call me. I don't think I like the track this post is taking. I mean, it's supposed to be about my Daddy, not my karma.

Soooooooooo.........Mom and Daddy and Mimi, my grandmother, were here Wednesday night to celebrate my Dad's birthday. We had a nice Southern style dinner, smoked pork chops, black eyed peas, and some corn bread. The children were sufficiently noisy, and my Daddy seemed to enjoy himself. I call that success! Then, of course, we ate cake! The kids put all the candles in (all ten of them) but I forgot to take pictures of that part. Trust me when I say it was cute.

However, due to Murphy's Law, dinner was nearly an hour later than I had anticipated. Fortunately for me, I have three children who can flat out take up an hour of grandparent time! Despite the small delays, we all enjoyed a nice evening and a pretty decent cake, if you ask me!

Happy Birthday, Daddy!!

It's Taking!

If you have ever hung out with my family, you have heard this routine before.

Me - HEY KID (insert the name of one of our children there)?

The Kid In Question - 'What?' or 'Huh?'

Me - 'Ma'am.'

The Kid In Question - 'Ma'am?'

Me - Well, here I say whatever it was that I was going to say to the child anyway.

We are constantly reminding our children to use their manners, sometimes subtly, sometimes not so subtly. I often end a request with 'yes ma'am', to be sure that they respond with 'yes ma'am' rather than some talk back. Because you all know the control freak in me needs compliance. Not mouthiness.

I push Thomas especially hard about being a gentleman, seeing as how he has two little sisters. And well, he just needs to be a gentleman, that's why. Regardless of sisters or not. Earlier this week, on one of those days that we made a crazy run to Kroger for just those few things that I somehow managed to not have, an impression was made upon the two older kids.

We had zipped through the store with each Thomas and Sarah Grace carrying a handbasket. I needed eggs, buttermilk, cream cheese, and something else. I forget what, but it was for red velvet cake for my Dad's birthday. I had Elizabeth hiked up on my hip and we managed to elicit smiles from every female shopper over the age of fifty, me the the crew. We made it to the checkout lanes without incident and eggs still intact. There were incredibly long lines to be noon on a weekday at a rural grocery store, but we managed to find a self check out that had just one fellow in front of us. He was buying up two huge things of toilet paper. That was it.

The man was emptying every pocket on his person looking for I have no idea what, when he looked at me and mine and said, "Ma'am, ya'll go on ahead of me. You look like you got your hands full.'

Here is where the hair on the back of my neck usually bristles up. 'Looks like you got your hands full.' It usually passes the lips of some semi-patronizing woman who has 1.684 children, a dog, a white picket fence, and a flat belly. And there is usually a bit of disdain in her eyes and she gives us all the once over.

But this guy was just being genuine. He stepped aside and insisted even after my initial, "No, no, we're just fine.'

So, as we stepped around him, Sarah Grace turns around and looks at him and says, "Your a dentleman, awen't you?"

Thomas cut his eyes a little and slid a look towards the man, then declared in a slightly glowering way, "I'm a gentleman, too, Sawuh Gwace."

And the kind man and I eyed one another and both tried not to laugh at the perceived breach to Thomas's territory.

Ahhh...maybe they really are listening to our instruction. Now, about that tactfulness....

Just A Quick Gloat... And A Few Other Things

Two of my three children are officially potty trained! Way to go Sarah Grace! She decided sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas that she didn't want to wear diapers anymore. What timing. I managed to put her off until the day after Christmas, and over the course of the last two weeks, she has done it! I am so proud of that kid.

In other news, I have a very clean bathroom mirror. Now, aren't you glad you visited our little bit of bloggy land today? To hear about clean mirrors? Let me expound on that. Yesterday, I plopped Thomas and Sarah Grace into the bathtub to play for a bit. As I sat in the living room and played with Elizabeth, I noticed a very pleasant smell. At first, I thought it was something from outside since it was almost 70 here yesterday and I had the windows open to allow fresh air circulation.

As I sat there inhaling the comforting and familiar scent, I realized it wasn't from outside. It was lavender. I went into the bathroom to see this:

I know it's hard to tell, but that mirror is coated, soaked actually, in Barefoot's disinfecting spray. The mirror was disinfected enough to make a doctor proud. Disinfected, but a little oily, since the spray has essential oils in it. I wiped up the excess, and there was so much of it I could actually squeeze liquid out of the once dry cloth I used to mop up the mirror with, then grabbed the Barefoot glass cleaner and re-soaked the mirror. I left it there to do it's work as I washed and dried and lotioned and dressed the kids. When I went back, my mirror was sparkling clean! Knowing that when my children decide to help me clean that the cleaners will not be harmful is such a nice feeling. Knowing that when they overdose a defenseless mirror with the wrong cleaner that the 'worst' side effect is the lovely smell is also a nice perk to the cleaners! Thanks, Lora, for making my home safer for my kiddos!

With Thomas not feeling quite up to par, we are still moving slowly around here. Some of us, that is. Sarah Grace is finding new ways to entertain herself since her playmate 'had his fwoat cut out'. Yesterday, she demonstrated her organizing skills. Check out those lines!

As I sat and watched her carefully and meticulously put all her items in order, I was in awe. Sarah Grace is generally a blur of energy. It is amazing how much her legs go on any given day, and her constant state of motion makes photo opportunities , well, frustrating. It is good to know that all that energy can be focused.

Thomas, with his lack of energy, is finding new and quiet way to entertain himself, as well. His current interest is pulling his eyebrows. He tells me 'it feels funny'. Okay. I bet it does. He is still soaking in a lot of TV time and I get tickled to glance at him over there pulling his eyebrows. Yes, I know it sounds weird. But who defined normal, anyway. And what were they like as a child?

And then, of course, there is my Elizabeth. She is a bundle of energy, too. Her top four teeth are all edging through, along with a couple of new bottom ones, and she is always on the look out for something to relieve her little gums on. Food, toys, shoes, peoples fingers, the edges of the chairs or ottoman, pretty much anything. Despite the discomfort, she is full of sweetness and laughter and squeals of joy (very high pitched squeals, but what do you do?)
And there you have it. Our yesterday. It is about 9:30 a.m. and all three kids are yawning and being sleepy. It was a rough night of all of us. I think I will pull everyone up here and read some good stories, have an early lunch, then a nice long nap for us all. Yeah, that sounds like the order of the day.

The Guys and Their Guitars

Thomas's favorite Christmas gift is, well, his remote control car. It gets a lot of laughter miles in this house. The thing is pretty cool. It has monster truck wheels on a little race car type body and when it hits an object head on, it flips over and is a whole different car. Red number 59 on one side and yellow number 95 on the other. And it has some torque power, too! It can push around the the Little People Ark, animals and all.

It is also a little bit possessed. But only if you forget to turn the power off. Being radio controlled, it picks up odd waves and will sometimes spin it's wheels. Yeah, it has freaked me out a time or twelve.

Soanyway, another of Thomas's favorite gifts is his guitar. He carries it around and serenades us with songs and smiles as he struggles to hold the thing in his arms and play it while standing. We need to get him a strap for it. He will often tell me, 'I can't find X song.' This means he can't strum out anything that reminds him of the melody of whatever song it is he is currently trying to master. Occasionally he will wander over to the piano and play a couple of keys, then strum his guitar, tune it a little, and 'look' for the song again.

It's all very entertaining, let me assure you.

Especially when Joshua goes after it to for real tune it. He is patient though.

And for his patience, I got to enjoy a duet tonight. Jingle Bells, of course. Played by Joshua and Thomas for my hearing pleasure. Love my guys and their guitars!

Missing Pieces

Thomas had his tonsils and adenoids removed on Thursday. It is simple as that. Well, as simple as that, yeah. My mommy's heart didn't think it so simple as I dropped off Joshua and Thomas at the Surgery Center so I could run Elizabeth out to a friend's house for the day. My heart squeezed tight as my brave little boy walked into that building and I just prayed that I would be back in time to see him before they took him back for surgery.

Thankfully, I did. I walked into the back area with one of the men from our church to see Thomas happily bouncing around on a bed with his new moose. The Surgery Center gives all the children a Beanie Baby to keep them company and take home with them afterwards. Thomas was thrilled with the little television that was allowing him to watch the Doodle Bops. Scary people, those Boppers. Just my opinion, though. We got to stay with him for nearly an hour before the nurses came to take him away.

Joshua, Jack and I sat out in the waiting area discussing mostly music stuff for our choir when I spied the doctor walking into the room. The procedure was pretty quick, like half an hour or so, but I felt I had talked about a lot of music when that doctor came in. He let us know all went well and we could go on up to Thomas's recovery room to wait for him.

On the way up, we were joined by a couple of other guys from our church and we all went up, chatting kid stuff as we waited for Thomas to come in. When the nurse carried him in, he whimpered for about ten minutes or so, but upon being offered popsicles and jell-o, decided this stint might not be so bad. Yeah, he sat in that bed and watched T.V. for about five hours, consuming tons of jell-o, apple juice, and popsicles. Plus the I.V. line that was pumping fluids through his body. We were released and went to pick up our Elizabeth and come home to crash for the afternoon.

We did take some pictures of Thomas, all acting like royalty in his bed with the nurses at his beck and call. They are in the same place as the Santa's Village pictures. Stuck on a 35mm camera. All the trauma. We have to have them developed before we can actually see them. *sigh* I will need therapy for this.

The first thirty-six hours were rough, but our little man is a trooper. We made a pallet for him and he watched several movies, read a few books, played a game or two of match, and slept. We fought to keep his temperature down, but now we are settling into a more or less new routine for the boy.

The boy who is missing tonsils and adenoids. I have wondered just how many of those body parts are disposable.

Another thing missing lately is Sarah Grace. She was shipped to Scottsboro for most of the week and the entire weekend in an effort to keep things more peaceful and calm for Thomas. Those two are each others favorite playmate. When one is sick, the other one is at odds as to what to do by themselves. They romp, they roam, they giggle, the argue, they run, they scream, they wrestle, they bounce, they are pre-schoolers.

Oh, but how I miss that little girl. She is my helper, my nurturer, my Sweet Girl. I am glad that she is getting to visit with the grandparents and be the center of attention. I am glad Thomas gets a few days to really get past the hardest of his recuperation, but I will be glad when all the pieces of our family are home again.

The Real Reason People Come To This Blog

As I pulled up my blog the other day, I realized the screen was full of words. There might be a few of you who check here occasionally to see what I am currently ranting about, but I know that the family folks would much rather see the pictures. Please excuse my verbosity and enjoy the many pictures of our varied holiday experiences. Oh, and Happy New Year!!!
